چکیده

JOSEPH MEITES, BERNARD T. DONOVAN, and SAMUEL M. McCANN (editors), Pioneers in neuroendocrinology, volume II, New York and London, Plenum Press, 1978, 8vo, pp. 422, $39.00. This series of autobiographies continues with twenty-four further essays. The individuals concerned include the three editors, Roger Guillemin, and Solly Zuckerman. These are the second generation of pioneers, whose contributions began in the 1950s and who are still active today. Each discusses his own work, and together they provide a remarkable survey of about three decades of advances, which include chemotransmitters, hypothalamic releasing factors, anterior pituitary hormones, neuroendocrinal control of reproduction, central nervous system activities and their interaction with endocrine function, and the development of mammary and pituitary tumours. Some may question whether this is true history, but these articles will certainly be the stuff of tomorrow's history. For the time being they will make fascinating and valuable reading for many.

On the Possibility of Skeptical Scenarios

Consider this picture of the skeptical dilemma: Descartes sits in his armchair, wondering what the world is like, and worried whether it is as it seems to be. He realizes that there are many ways the world could be — many possible ways for the world to be — that he lacks the resources to choose between. Since all the possibilities he’s considering include his having experiences like the ones he...

The Mars Effect Is Genuine: On Kurtz, Nienhuys, and Sandhu's Missing the Evidence

Kurtz, Nienhuys, and Sandhu (1997), instead of explaining the anomaly in their planetary data that we discovered (Ertel and Irving, 1997), launch a broadside attack against all claims of Gauquelin-type correlations. In our rejoinder, we provide evidence for highly significant Mars-effect results based on the skeptics’ own samples. Regarding CSICOP’s data problem, we suggested an inoffensive exp...

Descartes on Degrees of Freedom: A Close Look at a Key Text

In an influential article, Anthony Kenny charged that (a) the view of freedom in Descartes’ “1645 letter to Mesland” is incoherent, and (b) that this incoherence was present in Descartes’ thought from the beginning. Against (b), I argue that such incoherence would rather support Gilson’s suspicions that the 1645 letter is dishonest. Against (a), I offer a close reading of the letter, showing th...

Descartes ’ Philosophical Grounds for Algebra and Geometry

Cathay Ming Lih Liu: Descartes' Philosophical Grounds for Algebra and Geometry (Under the direction of Alan Nelson) Though neither Descartes nor Fermat developed analytic geometry as we understand the mathematical discipline today, they each developed a different central feature of it. But history of mathematics has not explained their differences in mathematical aims and practice in terms of p...
